Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Political socialization is the process by which individuals acquire political beliefs, values, and behaviors, which influence their political participation, including voting. Youth voter turnout is crucial to the health of a democracy, as it ensures that the voices of young people are heard in the political process. In Nigeria, especially in urban areas like Zaria LGA in Kaduna State, political socialization plays a key role in shaping the political engagement of the youth. Various factors, such as family, education, peer groups, media, and political campaigns, influence how young people form their political views and whether they participate in elections (Ogunleye & Ibrahim, 2024).

Zaria LGA, with its diverse population and active political landscape, serves as an ideal location to study the impact of political socialization on youth voter turnout. With increasing levels of youth activism and political awareness, it is important to understand the factors that contribute to or hinder youth participation in elections. This study aims to explore the relationship between political socialization and youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA, examining how different agents of socialization affect young people's engagement with the electoral process.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential for political socialization to increase youth voter turnout, studies show that political participation among young people in Nigeria, including Zaria LGA, remains low. The problem of low youth voter turnout is exacerbated by factors such as apathy, a lack of political education, and disenchantment with political parties. This study seeks to investigate how political socialization influences youth engagement in the electoral process in Zaria LGA and how these factors might contribute to or detract from increased voter turnout.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the effect of political socialization on youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA.

2. To examine the role of family, media, education, and peer groups in shaping political participation among the youth in Zaria LGA.

3. To identify the challenges that hinder youth voter turnout despite political socialization efforts in Zaria LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does political socialization affect youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA?

2. What role do family, media, education, and peer groups play in influencing youth political participation in Zaria LGA?

3. What are the challenges that hinder youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA, despite political socialization efforts?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Political socialization positively influences youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA.

2. Family, media, education, and peer groups are significant factors influencing youth political participation in Zaria LGA.

3. There are barriers, such as apathy and lack of political education, that hinder youth voter turnout in Zaria LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between political socialization and youth voter turnout in Northern Nigeria. The findings will provide insights into the factors that enhance or limit political participation among young people in Zaria LGA. This information can inform strategies for increasing youth engagement in the electoral process and help policymakers, political parties, and civil society organizations to better target youth in voter education campaigns.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on youth in Zaria LGA, Kaduna State, and examine how political socialization impacts their voter turnout. It will explore the role of family, media, education, and peer groups in shaping youth political behavior. Potential limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data from young people who may be hesitant to share political opinions and difficulties in measuring the long-term effects of political socialization on voter turnout.
